ITALY

Friday 19 September

Drove through Italy to Genova on normal roads heading for Cinque Terre. Bought fruit and veg from roadside stand. Bought loads for 5 euros with some grapes thrown in free. No veg the right shape or colour according to UK supermarkets but all local and very tasty. Should have stopped at mushroom stand but saw it too late. Lots of references to Porcini and Chanterelles must try some soon. Big mistake. Tried to drive through Genova. Absolute madness. Kamikaze lambrettas like rats swarming all over you and lunatic car drivers. Forced onto autostrada. Slept in dodgy parking area on autostrada overnight. Too knackered to cook Cheese and biscuits etc., Merlot, Cognac.

Saturday 20 September

Short of cash had we enough to pay toll ? Just. Down to Levanto on edge of Cinque Terre. Roads not really made for campers. Got last pitch on camp site. Decided to stay a couple of days to recuperate, lounge in sun and catch up with washing. Pork a la crème, Merlot, Cognac.

Sunday 21 September

Walked along coastal track to Monterosso. Hard but lovely walking through forest tracks on cliffs above the sea. Lots of undulations. Heather has had undulations since getting here ! Monterosso packed but atmospheric. The rest of the villages look worth visiting but not easy in a camper. Ate out. Moules, Pasta, local wine, Tiramisu and local lemon digestif limontino.

Monday 22 September

Left for Pisa. Took motorway. Impressed by square surrounding leaning tower, expected tower to be in busy traffic island like Arc de Triomphe for some reason. Carried on to Florence. Stayed in car park overnight in centre of city. Saw the sights, Ponte Vecchio and walked through the streets at night. Florence is a serious shopping city. Ate pizza on the street and had a couple of beers in an Irish bar. Tried in vain to put some credit on mobile.

Tuesday 23 September

Set off early before 8 am to avoid rush hour. Still surrounded by rats swarming to work. Headed off towards Venice via motorway. Got to grips with system for ordering coffee and cakes in Italian cafes. Decided to stop on site on Lido de Jesolo peninsula to catch ferry to Venice. Found excellent 4 star campsite (more like a small town, must have 5000 pitches on it). The loo block (one of about 6) is so big I keep getting lost in it. Everything is segregated. Even separate Men and Women’s washing up facilities !!! Got DVD Unspoken. Did not have id, will carry with us in future.

Wednesday 24 September

Overcast so decided to go for bike ride around peninsular. Drizzly rain turned to downpour. Sheltered in roadside café used by locals was forced to drink coffee and grappa. H left washing out. Was wetter on return than when we left.

Thursday 25 September

Walked to Punto Sabbiano and caught ferry to Venice. 10.5 euro for day ticket included our return trip (40 mins.) and any use in Venice itself . We went to Murano to see glass factories and along the Grand Canal. Glorious weather. Ate out by side of Grand Canal, excellent food and value. Calzone to vie with those regularly eaten in Val Thorens. Who said Venice is expensive ? This is an excellent base from which to visit Venice and rest in the sun. Got another DVD Madeleine. Religion has a lot to answer for.

Friday 26 September

Decided to stay on site a couple more days to sunbathe. Richard now very pink on front will need to concentrate on back tomorrow. Fantastic pool. Had to buy bathing caps look very fetching. Bought English newspaper. All seemed a bit irrelevant. Started reading latest Harry Potter. Buying all bargains in supermarket on site. Site closes for the season on Tuesday. Another DVD in our surround sound laptop cinema. The Bourne Identity.

Saturday 27 September

Lots of people packing up to go home. Several German caravans with awnings and full kitchens, including wooden floors and washing machines. We are intrigued as to how they get it all home.

Trying to swap empty German gas bottle for one with gas in. Tried to read e-mails on site internet. Not allowed to open more than one window at once so impossible for me to get off my host site. Bad design. Still not got more credit on mobile. They cannot get our address right.

Sunday 28 September
