LEAVING THE COUNTRY

Monday 11 August

Final act for Made in Cumbria , took down Lowther show equipment.

Regional networking event and Party at Rheged. Loads of people there, good to see them all. Given Salomon Crossmax Skis as leaving Pressie. Will get lots of use this winter. Eternally grateful.

Back of Beyond, the Bentham Band , played Rheged.

Drinks in Ruby ( Made in Cumbria Show Vehicle) until 3 am, just one more time. Sausage, Egg and Chilli as late night snack.

Will always be grateful to all MIC staff, MIC members and friends from Economic Development Agencies for 15 years or so of stimulating work and it finishing so memorably.

Decided to cycle along rivers and canals. From campsite went down to Thames in central Oxford , then to Osney Lock, past the Perch, across the watermeadows to Trout at Godstow, White Hart Wytham, stopped at Plough Wolvercote, Today’s beer Everards Tiger Very Good. Reminisced about acquiring barrel of Tiger after 1st Oxford Poly Beer Festival (1976?) with very genial landlord discussed beer and Morrels brewery and old pubs in Headington, from Richard’s student days.

Cycled down canal into town passed lovely terraced cottages with canal side gardens. Decided to eat ethnic in Cowley. All shut. Went back into town to home cooked Japanese café EDEDME. Only had £10 and they did not take cards. Negotiated a large portion of Korean spiced noodles and sticky rice with green tea. Highly recommended.

Went to watch A Winters Tale by Oxford Shakespeare Co in Wadham College Gardens. Evening performance, picnicked on cheese and red wine. Very entertaining and well acted. Walked back to camp site and had humungous chips for 90p.

Friday 29 August

1st Wedding Anniversary.

Went to Sherborne. Beer of the day Hall and Woodhouse.

Visited Cerne Abbas and its giant with erection. Origin not known but apparently could be a possible caricature of Oliver Cromwell. Superb beautiful little village worth a trip with good eating I am reliably informed. Lovely meal with Dave, Sam, Bob (great raconteur of life as a rural Copper) (When I get back ask me to tell you the ones about a) the Big bloke in pub and the fight and blue movies and b) Herd of cows pooed on car and Farmers response to reprimanding the culprit) & Sheila Vickery Tone and Jude (sounds like a new exercise class). Lots of fizz and Crozes Hermitage rouge.

Bognor. Birdman day. The competition being to see who can fly the furthest by launching themselves off Bognor Pier. Brilliant day out. Richard Branson dropped in to visit. Virgin launched a helium filled Concorde off into sky to promote their bid to keep it in service. Slogan British Airways can’t keep it up. Virgin can. Winning hang-glider kit went 80 metres. Set off to Portsmouth. Camped for free in car park. Went to see Pirates of the Caribbean in Gunners quay shopping centre.
