Drove to Ile de Re. Stopped at Parthenay on route. Fantastic medieval
town with ramparts by the river. Museum with built in theatre. Saw two
kingfishers on river, always an omen of glad tidings to Richard. Frenchman
stopped us and insisted we went up the tower to see the view. So much
for miserable French attitude. H had best Almond croissants ever. Toll bridge to Island. Found site at Ars en Re after much searching.
Village nicer than first thought. Artist from La Rochelle with excellent
multimedia pics of Fishermen, would probably have bought if not travelling.
Beach full of seaweed but French ladies collecting shellfish. Palourdes.
Using small rake. Fancy a go at that.. Seafood Salad and Rougemont brought
with us. Heather having difficulty with tooth. The crown coming loose.
Crown drops off , Richard sticks back on with super glue but not straight
!!

Cycled North West of Island through Salt Marshes. Bought Fleur de
Sel local natural sea salt use it in all cooking now. Beeches full of
weed. Stones on beech with natural holes in them. Ideal for Artisan
jewellery. Found free camping area for Motor Homes. Will stay there
tomorrow. Went fishing on beach with newly acquired shellfish digging
rake. Had Palourdes for tea and curry. “Fishing on foot” for Palourdes
is the most like gardening I have ever done. Got the hang in the end.
Given great little book Ti Gourmet. Gave all details of diggable shellfish.
Web site
www.tigourmet.com Also covers various islands such as Guadeloupe
and Martinique. Chicken Korma and Domaine de Laurel Saint Chinian. |

Toured south of Island. Visited lovely fishing villages turned to
tourism marinas. Saint Martin de Re and La Flotte, both well worth a
visit. Went to fish market and bought Moules and Langoustines. Set off
late afternoon. Pulled into Saintes on the Charente thought it was Cognac,
wondered why I could not find the way out Nice Roman heritage and river.
Mini Arc de Triomphe. Drove till 9.00pm, parked up for free in rest
area by the side of N10 south of Barbezieux. Ate Moules Marinieres
& Cotes de Rhone Villages again. Felt very smug at not paying for camping. |
